The Walk Home
“You ever see that one shoe in the tree?” she asked.
Ray squinted ahead. “Yeah. I always wonder about it.”
“I like to think it’s a message.”
“From the squirrels?”

“No, from algebra students. Like... ‘Abandon hope, all who enter this chapter.’”
Ray grinned. “The Shoe of Doom. A warning.”
They both laughed.
Hope pulled her hoodie sleeves down over her hands, even though it wasn’t cold. She didn’t know why the quiet felt so comfortable with him, like a pause she didn’t have to fill.
WHAT THIS SAYS ABOUT STRENGTH
Sometimes strength isn’t about standing tall or speaking loudly. It’s about walking beside someone: quietly, steadily, without needing to fix anything.
